Flash! Friday seems very famous, yet I’ve only recently heard of it. I think we get a picture prompt and a word prompt, but I’m not 100% sure. There’s just 24 hours for posting your entry. We had unexpected (at least to me) visitors, so I didn’t get it completed in time. For week 13 the prompts were the word aspiration and this picture:
Dragon of the Falls
More than anything, Tung wished to marry Phuong, but since she was the Mandarin’s daughter and he was destined to be a lowly farmer that could not be. Even in stories such a pairing was rare, so how could he hope for it in real life?
Undeterred, he scraped together an offering and headed to the pagoda. The abbott found his meagre collection of coins insulting. None of the monks famed for wisdom deigned to speak with him. Only old Hoang took pity. Over interminable cups of green tea he listened, then offered his advice. Tung screeched in fright when he heard the suggestion at first but by the end he was nodding and smiling.
It took him a week to gather then hide some innocuous parcels. Before the whole village Tung declared he was going to kill the dragon that lurked at the waterfall at the end of the valley. Taking his axe amid mocking laughter, he marched away. Returning at sunset coated in blood, Tung carried a grim collection of trophies: a tounge, teeth, a beard, claws. All culled from other animals, but none save old Hoang knew. Tung was feted, and thus through trickery did a humble farmer rise above his station.
