I was a touch mopey a while back, having a whinge to a mate about how I should call myself an aspiring aspiring writer, as it’s even another step removed. She gave me some good advice, and then after I finished reading her email, I went through the backlog of her tumblr that I hadn’t seen for a few days, and saw this post she’d reblogged:
draw stick figures. sing off key. write bad poems. sew ugly clothes. run slowly. flirt clumisly. play video games on easy. you do not need to be good at something to enjoy the act. talent is overrated. do things you like doing. it’s ok to suck
It really resonated and motivated me. Not to write of course, heaven forfend that I’d be focus on what I “should” be doing. Instead, I got a burning desire to make it into an animated gif. I can’t draw well, and I don’t really understand layers. But what better way to grok them by messing up repeatedly in a fun side project? Surely it won’t take long?
I reckon it took about 20 hours or so to make. 93 layers for the stick figure character, and 93 individual pictures later I’m ready to stitch it all together (that’s 93 that I keep, not counting the ones where I had to go back and re-do them because I had a better idea but didn’t save them in separate layers or something). A waste of time because it’s not very slick? Maybe, but it was fun. And that’s kind of the point. Hopefully the intense focus on this project will carry over into my writing now that I’ve had a bit of a break.
